Guided, one-hour personal tours of the interior are available for $275 (1-2 adults) and $450 (3-4 adults). Diehard fans can indulge in an Eames tradition, a picnic in the house meadow, for $750 (1-4 adults). Includes picnic basket and a tour of the exterior and interior. The bivalves whetted our appetites for the official appetizers, including the ubiquitous lobster mac ‘n’ cheese. (Is there a menu in town without this dish?) It turned out to be more of a hearty meal than a warm-up to the main event.

Rappahannock Oyster Bar

Is scattered with elegant oyster bars that serve fresh shellfish and world-class wines, alongside immaculate vibes. Many places offer oysters Rockefeller, which come grilled and topped with a rich garlic butter. For savoring the last days of summer—and any season, for that matter. Broad Street Oyster Company is a fantastic seafood shack in Malibu that’s filled with so many oysters, mussels, shrimp, and uni you’ll wonder if their “local source” is actually the Aquarium of the Pacific. Here, the sunny Malibu coast glistens, the salty sea air kisses your skin in a way that feels like it’s hitting on you, and Broad Street will hook you up with a world-class selection of fresh oysters served over crushed ice. Located in Highland Park northeast of Downtown LA, Heritage Square Museum is a living history museum that explores the settlement and development of Southern California during its first 100 years of statehood.

Aww, shucks! Here’s where to find the best oysters in L.A.

The raw scallops with grapefruit are also highly worth your time, if you’re in need of even more things served on the half shell. A lot of places that call themselves “oyster bars” are anything but. They have an actual oyster bar upstairs, and they’re shucking a wide variety of excellent oysters from both coasts.

Not many people know this, but the oysters at Mariscos Jalisco are incredible. Of course, no visit is complete without their signature tacos or ceviches, but next time you’re here, add an oyster or two to whatever you order. They sell them for a dollar or two a pop, but our favorite way to enjoy them is just ordering the campechana—a rich, tomato-based cocktail packed with an ocean’s-worth of shrimp, abalone, baby octopus, and one raw oyster floating on top.

The Annenberg Community Beach House opened to the public in April 2009. The site is open daily and is also used as a special events/wedding venue and filming location. In July 2019, the Hollyhock House was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. There are more than 1,000 World Heritage sites around the world, and the group of Wright sites is now among only 24 sites in the U.S. The collection represents the first modern architecture designation in the country on the prestigious list. It features Joseph Young's sculpture Triforium, with 1,500 blown-glass prisms synchronized to an electronic glass bell carillon.

This place is bright and airy, and remains shockingly tourist-free for how close it is to the beach (if you’re sitting in the right seat, you can see the water). Despite its name, the Oyster House doesn’t look like it hails from the Cape Cod area. With its hexagonal white-tile flooring, inviting wood bar, outdoor brick patio, and upstairs dining room with brown paper over the white tablecloths, the quaint row-house restaurant could easily have been plucked off the streets of Paris. The only thing missing is a French sneer from the wait staff. The Gamble House in Pasadena is widely regarded as a masterpiece of the Arts and Crafts style. The three-story house and its furnishings were designed by Charles and Henry Greene in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter & Gamble Company.

The mall opened in 1974 and includes a four-level parking garage with 2,400 spaces. Pico House was a luxury hotel built in 1870 by Pío Pico, a successful businessman who was the last Mexican Governor of Alta California. With indoor plumbing, gas-lit chandeliers, a grand double staircase, lace curtains, and a French restaurant, the Italianate three-story, 33-room hotel was the most elegant hotel in Southern California. The Pico House is listed as a California Historical Landmark (No. 159). Our favorite places to eat fresh fish, oysters, uni, and more.

The lovely, underlying flavors—lemon zest, basil, and Parmigiano-Reggiano—helped support the dish. For months, the tall windows and doors at 1728 Thames St. were plastered with thick brown paper. Construction trucks were out front, but curious passersby (including me) couldn’t tell what was going on in the centuries-old Fells Point building. The Stahl House was declared Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #670 in 1999.

At 9th Street, it merges with Spring Street in Downtown LA, and between Cesar E. Chavez Avenue and 9th Street, Main Street shares a one-way couplet with Spring Street. From the northeast, Main Street begins as a continuation of Valley Boulevard west of Mission Road in Lincoln Heights as 'North Main Street'. Any place that sells marked-up bottles and bowls of olives can call itself a wine bar. The seared Block Island scallops were nicely burnished from a quick turn in the pan and meltingly soft inside. The farm-fresh succotash of corn, peas, and red peppers was a pleasing addition. The lobster and crab risotto with peas was laden with seafood but the rice was too chewy.

In September 2006, the Eames House was added to the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark. It was designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #381 in July 1988. Dudley Market catches most of the seafood they serve at their Venice restaurant on the team's very own fishing boat. That’s a little bit tougher with oysters, but you'll still predominantly see West Coast varieties on the menu. These come with a really pepper-lime mignonette and go great with their long list of natural wines.

In 2007, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) listed the Stahl House as one of the top 150 structures on its "America's Favorite Architecture" list, one of only 11 in Southern California, and the only private residence on the list. The Stahl House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. Mercifully, the storm didn’t cause the expected damage, and Thames Street Oyster House took down its protective sheathing to finally concentrate on establishing a niche in this restaurant-and-bar-saturated community.

The Avila Adobe is LA’s oldest house still standing in its original location, and is designated as California Historic Landmark #145. Originally built in 1818 by Francisco José Avila, it has since been the home to many of his family members and descendants. Today, the Avila Adobe’s interior depicts the California lifestyle of the 1840s. Dark wood tables, four-poster beds, candelabras and elaborate carpets create a 19th century atmosphere.

The walls of the Avila house are made of adobe brick, a material consisting of clay, water and other organic materials like straw. Set amid the crowds and the urban commotion of Grand Central Market, The Oyster Gourmet is an unusual-looking, vaguely steampunk-y small wooden stand designed to look like a giant open oyster shell. And as you might expect, they’ve really only got three things on the menu besides wine, and the one most worth your time is the plate of oysters. The selection constantly changes, and the shuckers are super knowledgeable–so even if you don’t know the difference between a Blue Point and a Wellfleet, they’re always happy to help you figure out what you’ll like. An awesome Manhattan Beach seafood spot the size of a studio apartment, Fishing With Dynamite is the best place to go in the South Bay for oysters and a beer. They’ve got a great selection, from a few different Cape Cod varieties to ones from Baja and Morro Bay.

Thames Street Oyster House is also open for lunch Wednesday-Sunday. Hunks of beautiful claw and tail meat spilled over the open-face crunchy roll. Sitting in the upstairs dining room with a view of the harbor, we wanted to linger over dessert. They’re made in house, which may or may not explain why they took so long to reach our table. The shells were properly set on a bed of rock salt, and their briny inhabitants were dressed with creamed spinach sporting Pernod and Parmesan.

Main Street continues south through South Los Angeles and enters Carson 2 miles (3.2 km) north at the intersection of Lomita Boulevard. In Wilmington Main Street moniker ends, the street continuing on as Wilmington Boulevard. Main Street enters Downtown Los Angeles passing by the edge of the Los Angeles Plaza. It continues through the Civic Center area, which is built on top of the site of the buildings — nearly all demolished — that in the 1880s through 1900s formed the city's Central Business District.

Rappahannock Oyster Bar

Having been the residence of the Schindlers and then other creatives, this WeHo hidden gem is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is open to the public Wednesday through Sunday as an architectural center. As the name might imply, this spot on the Redondo Pier takes seafood very seriously. It’s basically a fish market with a huge, multi-level dining room, and when you want to order oysters, you grab a sheet of paper, mark what you want, and hand it over for them to shuck. They source their oysters from all over the globe, including both coasts of the US, New Zealand, and Scotland. If you really want to taste oysters from around the world, but don’t feel like dusting off your passport, this is the best place to do it. From the outside, Connie & Ted’s looks like a futuristic restaurant set amid Boystown.

Today, the house is owned by the City of Pasadena and operated by the University of Southern California School of Architecture. Two fifth-year USC architecture students live in the house full-time; the resident students change every year. Movie fans will recognize the house as Doc Brown’s mansion from the Back to the Future movie trilogy.

The sidewalk patio has so many string lights, you’ll feel like you’re eating under an old theater marquee. But if you’d rather sit inside, there's a long wooden bar where you can bring a date. If you can, stop by on a Monday night to take advantage of Liv’s half-off oyster deal. Sometimes we want cold, plump, alarmingly fresh, briny-sweet oysters and nothing else.

The only Richard Neutra-designed house that is now open regularly to the public, the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences is a Silver Lake hidden gem that was built by the famed architect in 1932. He ran his practice out of a studio here, and along with his wife Dione, raised three sons in this house, which he designed to demonstrate that Modernist principles could be enjoyed by less affluent clients, while maintaining privacy. Natural light, glass walls, patios and mirrors are hallmarks of the Neutra VDL House. Tours of the property, given by Cal Poly Pomona architecture students, are offered on Saturdays from 11 a.m.

Docent-led tours are also available, with options for a one-hour tour or 20-minute exterior-only tour. Located at The Row in DTLA, Rappahannock Oyster Bar is a go-to spot for an elevated lunch near the office. The space has an industrial vibe, and the patio is perfect for enjoying cold oysters on a sunny day. However, the marble oyster counter is beautiful and even offers a peak at the behind-the-scenes magic in the kitchen. One of the best things about dining at Rappahannock Oyster Bar is the fact that everything is as sustainably and responsibly-sourced as possible. The Chesapeake Bay-farmed oysters are the restaurant’s signature variety, but there are also plenty of West Coast oysters to try, too.

The stained glass windows and exposed brick are original to the building. The recently opened Queen St. (the sister restaurant of Found Oyster) was named after one of the most iconic streets in Charleston, South Carolina. Inspired by chef Ari Kolender’s upbringing in Charleston, Queen St. transports guests to the coastal South with its rustic decor, vintage paintings and seafood-forward menu. The oyster bar serves as the focal point of the restaurant, and features stained glass and warm wooden accents. The bar-style seating is perfect for solo diners hoping to enjoy a round of oysters at their leisure, or couples looking to dine casually.

The public is invited to visit the Eames House for a self-guided tour of the exterior during open hours. Admission is $10 and reservations are required to visit the grounds. Groups with 10 or more visitors must make an appointment and sign a group release form prior to visiting.

The site that is currently known as the Annenberg Community Beach House was originally a five-acre oceanfront property belonging to William Randolph Hearst and his mistress, Marion Davies. The legendary parties held at the compound during Hearst and Davies’ tenure had guest lists that often numbered in the thousands. Luminaries such as Howard Hughes, Clark Gable, Charlie Chaplin, Bette Davis, Carole Lombard, Cary Grant, Winston Churchill, and Gloria Swanson all spent time at the massive estate at one time or another. Just five months after he and his family moved in, he was found shot to death by his longtime friend, Hugh Plunket. Through a selling of the estate and mansion to different developers and eventually the City of Beverly Hills, the entire grounds were dedicated as a public park in 1971 and is also the site of the city’s largest reservoir. (6 p.m. Daylight Savings) for a stroll around the majestic estate and gardens.

The knockout, though, was the shrimp ceviche—a bowl of plump shrimp “cooked” in a citrus marinade of lime, orange, ginger, and cilantro. We ended up with six chilled, plump oysters on the half shell—do try the Kumamoto ones from California—that we slurped happily with a variety of condiments, including a traditional mignonette with shallots and black pepper. Serving only the finest quality seafood available, we source our product from the most reputable and respected purveyors and fishermen, locally, domestically, and sustainably whenever possible. The bar offers handmade cocktails, along with a great draft beer and wine selection, including many local options as well as New England favorites. Join us in our inviting main bar room, upstairs water view dining area, or charming back courtyard. Like many historic buildings in Fells Point, Thames Street Oyster House has lived several lives, functioning as a brothel, saloon, and gift shop before opening in 2011 as a seafood restaurant. The raw bar features a mouth-watering array of oysters, caught in regional, Atlantic, and Pacific waters.

A few meat options are thrown in, too, like a grilled skirt steak with beet relish and sweet plantains. The chef, Eric Houseknecht, has composed a casual menu with thoughtful, seasonal ingredients. The Stahl House (aka Case Study House #22) was designed by architect Pierre Koenig and built in 1959. Perched in the Hollywood hills above the city, the Stahl House is an icon of Mid-Century Modern architecture. In 2016, TIME named Shulman's photo one of the 100 Most Influential Images of All Time.

Once the house is baked and cooled and you have your icing made, it’s time to build the gingerbread house. Royal icing is the “glue” that holds the house together. It’s also the glue adhering any candies to the walls and roof. As you can see in these photos, I covered the roof with royal icing before piping the buttercream on.

The mixture might look curdled at this stage and that’s OK. Temperature differences in the ingredients can lead to this, but the dough will come together when the flour is added. Next mix in the vanilla and molasses (Images 7 & 8), until mixed through. If your butter is not as soft, then place the butter in your mixer and mix it for about 5 minutes with a paddle attachment to make it soft and creamy (Image 3).

Try using shredded wheat cereal to create a thatched roof, pretzel rods to form a log cabin or candy pebbles to make a stone facade. To attach the roof, pipe icing along the peaked edges of the front and back walls. Position roof pieces into place and let fully dry before decorating. Your gingerbread house will be 5-1/2 inches wide and 6-1/2 inches long. You can use a cardboard cake board, a serving tray, or just cut a foam board from the dollar store.

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking powder, ginger, cinnamon and cloves. In another bowl, whisk together the egg, molasses, oil and brown sugar. Gradually combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients, mixing well. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake until golden brown, about minutes.

This is where it really helps to have more than two hands working on a house, and why making a gingerbread house is so much more fun with company than alone. If you are working on this alone, it may help to grab some canned goods from the pantry and use the cans to help prop up the pieces while the icing mortar is drying. Chilling the dough is imperative—otherwise the house pieces will lose shape and constructing will be impossible.

But the taste will be different with blackstrap molasses, as it’s more bitter and salty with a potent molassey / mineral flavor. I've had a complicated "situationship" with this classic dish, but finally have a recipe I love. Houses can be assembled directly onto a plate or cake stand, but if you’re making many or want a portable choice, foil-wrapped cardboard makes a great base. Cut a circle a bit larger than the house from corrugated cardboard and wrap in a layer of heavy-duty aluminum foil. I found it helpful to weigh the dough into 20 oz chunks, pat into squares, and wrap individually before refrigerating.

Use royal icing to "glue" pieces of candy to the house. Ditch the “pinterest perfection” goal and get messy. The piped crusting buttercream on my pictured gingerbread house hid about 100 mistakes. Remember, there are no rules when it comes to decorating. I gathered a few links for you to use as decorating inspiration. There are so many beautiful (and SIMPLE) decorated gingerbread houses out there.

The fact that Tran is the son of Vietnamese immigrants and has a Vietnamese surname could help him build name recognition but won’t be determinative, DeSipio said. I like to keep it as a square so that it’ll be easier to roll out later (Image 15). Do not knead the dough – the way you would with bread dough. Instead, simply fold the dough over itself a few times. The dough might be fairly sticky, so use the remaining flour to flour the dough and your work surface (Image 12).

Our Royal Icing is made from scratch daily during the holiday season. When you receive your order, the icing will be in a container that we have stored in our cooler. If you do not intend to use the icing immediately, we recommend storing it in a refrigerator until you are ready. When ready, keep the icing covered while allowing it to come to room temperature. Any unused icing can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days.

This will allow the decorations to dry on nicely without fighting gravity. Substitute the butter with a vegan butter (suitable for baking). However, this dough may need a little extra flour to get the same consistency, if the vegan butter is softer than regular butter. I love to use candy to decorate the house and make it colorful.

If you’re decorating with kids, it helps to assemble the houses the day before, so they are fully stable and ready to pile on the candy. My siblings and I used to decorate a gingerbread house together every year. We'd each get to decorate one side of the house, and the end result would be a hodgepodge of icing and candy. It wasn't always pretty, but we always had fun decorating the house together. There are a few things you can do to make sure your gingerbread house is nice and sturdy.

Finish off your house design with some landscaping. Coat the base around the house with royal icing, and sprinkle with Sparkling Sugar — keep your decorations simple or go as wild as you’d like (gumdrop topiaries, pretzel fencing, candy cane trellis!). Decorate happy little gingerbread people to complete the scene. National Lampoon's Animal House 1978 Turner Classic Movies

If you want to answer the questions, "Who starred in the movie National Lampoon's Animal House?" and "What is the full cast list of National Lampoon's Animal House?" then this page has got you covered. The talents of director John Landis and Saturday Night Live's irrepressible John Belushi conspired to create a rambunctious, subversive college comedy that continues to resonate. Unconcerned, the Deltas organize a toga party, recruiting Pinto and Flounder to shoplift party supplies from a supermarket. At the market, Pinto meets a young cashier named Clorette and invites her to the party, while Otter flirts with an older woman, who turns out to be Wormer's alcoholic wife, Marion. During the toga party, at which Otis Day and the Knights perform, Otter seduces Marion, while Pinto and Clorette make out until she passes out, drunk.

Pinto resists the temptation to rape her and instead takes her home in a shopping cart. He later discovers that she is the 13-year-old daughter of Carmine DePasto, the town mayor. For shooting purposes, the production team of ‘National Lampoon’s Animal House’ also traveled to Los Angeles County, the most populous county in the country. As per reports, they utilized the facilities of Universal Studios Lot at 100 Universal City Plaza in Universal City, an unincorporated area located within the San Fernando Valley.

Several of the actors who were cast as college students, including Thomas Hulce, Karen Allen, and Kevin Bacon, were just beginning their film careers. Matheson, also cast as a student, was already a seasoned actor, having appeared in movies and television since the age of 13. In 1978, Universal’s film division president, Ned Tanen, was in a rage about the not-yet-released Kennedy-era comedy. He was particularly livid over a scene in which white fraternity brothers and their sorority dates feel threatened by a roadhouse full of African-Americans. There will be riots across America,’” the director John Landis recalled in a recent interview.

Instead, the men of Titans choose to celebrate an event called "TOGA" which is heavily inspired by the iconic toga concert from the movie. In the 1980s, it was difficult for Titans to throw a Valentine's Day function because the vast majority of members were busy attending Valentine's Day functions put on by the Women's Social Clubs on campus. In a stroke of genius, the Titans administration decided to celebrate Groundhog Day rather than Valentine's Day. Over time, the Groundhog Day party evolved into the famous TOGA banquet and concert it is today.

The movie was set to be filmed at the University of Missouri until the president of the school read the script and refused permission. Unable to gain acceptance at the snootier fraternities they pledge, the Deltas, a a motley crew of misfits and sociopaths bent on disrupting the well-starched status quo, engage in various illegalities that land them in hot water with both the stern college dean and the neighboring jock fraternity. Their exploits eventually cause them to be placed on "double-secret probation," until finally, they are kicked out of school and, as the dean reminds them, newly eligible for the Vietnam draft. Their exploits eventually cause them to be placed on double-secret probation, until finally, they are kicked out of school and, as the dean reminds them, newly eligible for the Vietnam draft. Early in his career, while working with Second City, a group in Chicago, he was tapped to audition for Saturday Night Live, where he became beloved by audiences for his over-the-top physical comedy, characterizations, and often unhinged persona.

The University of Oregon stood in for the fictional Faber College as the team utilized the campus to the best of their abilities. While the Johnson Hall in Central Campus doubled for the Administration Building of Faber College, the Gerlinger Hall on the Women’s Memorial Quadrangle stood in for the Emily Dickinson Hall of the fictional college. Most of the pivotal sequences for ‘National Lampoon’s Animal House’ were lensed in Eugene, the second largest city in Oregon, right after Portland. The Dr. A.W. Patterson House at 751 East 11th Street doubled for the Delta House, but the property has been demolished. As for the interior scenes involving the Omega House were recorded in the Phi Kappa Psi house and the Sigma Nu house at 729 East 11th Street and 763 East 11th Avenue, respectively. In addition, the scenes set in Otter and Hoover’s bedrooms were shot on a film studio’s soundstage.

The film studio is home to over 30 sound stages spread across over 400 acres, production offices, dressing rooms, rehearsal halls, and a massive backlot area. Co-writer Chris Miller (III) based the National Lampoon short stories that gave rise to the film on his experiences in the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity at Dartmouth (from which he graduated in 1962). He is known for his extensive work as a film actor in Animal House, Amadeus (for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for playing the titular character), The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Parenthood, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Wings of Courage, The Heidi Chronicles, and Stranger than Fiction. The script, by Douglas Kenney, Chris Miller and Harold Ramis, aimed to capture the rude, subversive humor of the magazine, but the story — about the unruly fraternity Delta House at fictional Faber College — left Hollywood’s establishment cold. They recalled the film’s breakout star, John Belushi, who died of a drug overdose in 1982 at 33, as well as a real food fight and an on-campus melee.

The members and their dates dress up in their togas and attend a dinner where superlatives are distributed and other activities occur. Out of every club on campus, TOGA sells more tickets and draws more of a crowd than any other club-organized event. Of the younger lead actors, only the 28-year-old Belushi was an established star, but even he had not yet appeared in a film, having gained fame as an original cast member of Saturday Night Live, which was in its third season in the autumn of 1977.

It offers visitors a guide to filming locations, and the Knight Library has a collection of material on the film's production.[29] Between the third and fourth quarter of every football game at Autzen Stadium, "Shout" from the toga party scene is played, to which the entire stadium sings along. A few essential portions of the comedy movie were also recorded in and around the DePasto house at 2160 Potter Street in Eugene.

Otter flirts with Mandy, having previously had sex with her, unbeknownst to Marmalard. The longtime writing partners discuss their new film, working with Anna Faris and future projects. The actor who plays the younger version of the popular character talks about the new DVD. The accomplished actress talks about stepping into the role of Margaret Leary, working with this diverse cast, Indiana Jones 5 and much more. Actress Verna Bloom, stole nearly all of the Animal House scenes that she was in, has passed away after suffering dementia. Funko is celebrating some iconic movies of the 1970s and 1980s in their latest wave of Pop!

Additional portions of ‘National Lampoon’s Animal House’ were taped in Lane County, Oregon’s fourth most populous county. For instance, Cottage Grove, the third largest city in Oregon’s Lane County, served as another important production location for the movie. Specifically, the concluding parade scene in the movie was shot on Main Street, while the scene where the marching band is misdirected off the street was filmed at 733 East Main Street, both in Cottage Grove.

His films include Animal House, The Blues Brothers, Neighbors, Goin' South, Old Boyfriends, and Continental Divide. Furthermore, the Relax Inn at 1030 North Pacific Highway in Cottage Grove doubled for the Rainbow Motel in the John Landis directorial. Besides, some key scenes were recorded in Dexter, an unincorporated community in the county.

Animal House was the first film produced by National Lampoon, the most popular humor magazine on college campuses in the mid-1970s.[12] The periodical specialized in satirizing politics and popular culture. Many of the magazine's writers were recent college graduates, hence its appeal to students all over the country. They made their debut in 1973's National Lampoon's High School Yearbook, a satire of a Middle America 1964 high school yearbook. Kroger's and Pepperidge's characters in the yearbook were effectively the same as their characters in the movie, whereas Vernon Wormer was a P.E. The film's significant cultural impact can be seen across many college campuses in the United States. At Harding University, a private Christian university affiliated with the Churches of Christ, Titans Men's Social Club refuses to put on a spring formal for its members.

Other films include Midnight Madness, National Lampoon's Class Reunion, and Magic Kid. Animal House tells the wonderfully chaotic story of college fraternity misfits who battle with their dean and the rival fraternity’s president to keep their spot on campus. One death of a horse, "double-secret probation," multiple failed exams and a one-night stand with the dean’s wife later, the members of Delta Tau Chi get (spoiler alert!) expelled — and plot out an elaborate revenge. The cast of comedy classic 'Animal House' have pursued careers in acting, directing and producing since the film's release 40 years ago. Filming began on October 24, 1977, and concluded in the middle of December 1977.[1] and Landis brought the actors who played the Deltas up five days early to bond.

The pancakes were topped with lemon ricotta, powdered sugar, cream cheese glaze, blueberries and whipped cream. Lemon ricotta now needs to go on almost everything I make. After nearly a year of anticipation, the opening date for the third location of beloved East Coast-inspired restaurant, Hudson House Lakewood, is finally upon us. I recently went to the Addison Hudson House for a late Sunday brunch. We had a reservation and it was crowded, but it looked like those without a reservation were not having to wait more than 10 to 15 minutes for a table.

Another starter we tried was Hudson’s Avocado Dip with whipped avocado and ranch chips. This incredible chip and dip pairing was hard to stop chomping on throughout our meal. But room had to be saved, especially because the Hudson cheeseburger, Big Brother Lobster Roll, and French Chicken were coming out next.

The Stone Fruit with peach vodka, Patrón Citrónage, white cranberry, and fresh lime was the perfect choice. Paired with seafood tower, The Bouquet, we couldn’t have had a better start to our meal. As impressive as it was educational, the tower came with twelve oysters and an informational card explaining their origins and flavor profiles.

First off, I knew this was a cool place given that our server Jill had an amazing haircut, platinum and edgy — and also worked on the side as a DJ. The first full-service restaurant by Hunter Pond, founder of East Hampton Sandwich Co., along with partners Kyle Brooks, Wes Freeman, Hank Keller, and Justin Hollis, is now open on Lovers Lane. The restaurant is open daily for dinner and happy hour, and offers an “all-American menu” along with classic cocktails and a raw bar specializing in East Coast oysters. I opted for the “World’s Coldest Martinis” for my second drink.

All servers and management wore their masks and it truly felt like a mini vacation once the first cocktail came out — a frozen peach Bellini always doles out those beach vibes. We went on to sample many other items that our charming and knowledgeable server recommended. Those included the scallops, steak frites and ahi tuna. All good, but I must point out another item that I will likely return to have again and again — the lemon pancakes. Luckily we were able to get a table away from the crowded part of the restaurant, but we're near the kitchen. I enjoyed the Addison restaurant's ambiance a lot more.

On July 28, the Hudson House Lakewood dining room will be open at limited capacity and takeout orders. You can also get your frozen peach Bellinis to-go for $6 each. My colleague, the ever-so-chic Lisa Collins Shaddock, shared with me that she and her husband are diehard Hudson House brunch fans.

All were outstanding, but for me, nothing could beat the popular cheeseburger topped with pickles, minced onion, and Hudson sauce. And for dessert, do not miss the Key Lime pie — it’s one of the best things you’ll try. They were light and fluffy, almost as if they were the clouds from my culinary heaven.

This Hudson House has a charming outdoor patio, but alas the weather wasn’t on our side that day for dining al fresco. On my quest to become that ideal of a human, I have found a new favorite brunch spot, Hudson House. It boasts two Dallas area restaurant locations — one in Addison and the other in University Park, with a third is poised to open in early 2020 in Lakewood. On a weekday evening at Hudson House Addison, the covered outdoor patio was comfortable and safely spaced out.

When they go they like to play a game where they fantasize about traveling to the place where their oyster hails from and what they would do there for a vacation. If you know me or have read any of my restaurant stories in the past year you may have noticed that I want to become that guy — Mr. Brunch. The charming facade to the Hudson House Addison with its lovely patio.

(The smaller, Raspberry oysters ended up being my favorite.) The Bouquet also comes with snow crab claws, tuna tartare, shrimp cocktail, and grilled pineapple to mix it up. My dining companion and I decided to try all six oyster options at Hudson House and all were delicious, but I must say that the blue points were my absolute favorite. I made sure to note when we were leaving that during happy hour (every day from 3 to 6 pm) all oysters are half-price (normally it’s $3.50 per oyster). As I am not a true oyster aficionado I appreciated that each had a description. After experiencing almost half of the menu in one sitting, I get the hype. Keep an eye out for Hudson House’s Greek key and pineapple motifs hidden in antique materials soured from around the world.

Style guides should be attractive, inviting, visible, clear, and easy to use. As mentioned above, they should be aware that a whole host of audiences will be viewing them, so should therefore aim to be welcoming and useful for as many people as possible. Style guide maintenance is a hugely important topic and deserves to be covered in detail, so we’ll dive into how to create maintainable style guides in chapter 5. Pattern libraries are often treated as auxiliary projects, rather than as the component parts of the final product. By treating pattern libraries as something separate from the core project, they tend to fall into the nice to have category and become first on the chopping block when the going gets tough.

Atomic Design: The Book

It’s fascinating to hear the inconsistent names designers, developers, product owners, and other stakeholders all have for the same UI pattern. “Oh, we call that the utility bar.” “Oh, we call it the admin nav.” “Oh, we call it the floating action area! ” This exercise is an opportunity to unearth and iron out disparities between pattern labels, and also establish names for previously unlabeled patterns.

atomic design brad frost

Why should organizations create atomic designs?

Piggybacking off another project is a great way to sneak a pattern library into your organization. Style guides are important tools that help prevent chaos, both from a design and development standpoint and also from an organizational perspective. Here’s why style guides are now essential tools for modern web design and development. Pattern libraries, also known as front-end style guides, UI libraries, or component libraries, are quickly becoming a cornerstone of modern interface design. The rise of the web and content-managed websites makes it easier than ever for many people within an organization to publish content.

Creating maintainable design systems

Having the design represented in the browser in addition to other design artifacts gives teams the ability to paint a richer, more realistic picture of the UI they’re crafting. Teams may demonstrate an aesthetically focused design idea as a static image, and simultaneously demonstrate a working prototype of that same idea in the browser. After plugging the front-end code into a CMS, frantically finalizing the site’s content, and doing some last-minute QA testing, the team finally launches the site. While no one says it out loud, there’s a tinge of disappointment in the air alongside the joy and relief of getting the project out the door. After all, the live site lacks the glossy polish that the comps promised to the stakeholders, and friction between disciplines has bruised some relationships.

Necessary design elements

When standing alone, a button may not be able to serve any purpose, but put it in context with other design elements and a simple button can add great value to the user experience. Atomic design, developed by Brad Frost and Dave Olsen, is a methodology for crafting design systems with five fundamental building blocks, which, when combined, promote consistency, modularity, and scalability. This component is amazingly complex from an organizational standpoint. A homepage carousel on an e-commerce website requires input from a host of disciplines across the organization. Business owners and editorial staff must choose products to be featured in the carousel.

From the creation of atoms to the final design in the form of pages, designers know the value of each component. This is extremely important for organizations with big design teams working on multiple projects at the same time. If a structured process is created at the beginning, it helps the designers understand their roles and apply their skills accordingly.

It’s more important to make steps in the right direction than exhaust a ton of effort painting unrealistic pictures of what you want the final piece to be. A sound design system doesn’t roll off an assembly line, but is rather sculpted in iterative loops, building up fidelity as the project progresses. Of course, it’s preferable to get your clients, colleagues, and stakeholders excited about creating an interface design system, or at the very least get their blessing to pursue the project in a modular fashion.

Show, don’t tell: the power of interface inventories

Back-end developers need to ensure the component is properly wired up to the back-end system. The team at Phase2 Technology achieved the holy grail by using Pattern Lab as their pattern library development tool and Drupal as their content management system. A misconception about design systems is that once they’re established, they become an omnipotent and unchangeable source of truth. Thinking in such a rigid way is a surefire way to have your design system effort backfire. Users’ proximity to and involvement in the creation of the design system will undoubtedly vary. You may work on a singular product at a scrappy startup, so your small team could be simultaneously creating and using the design system.

These user interface frameworks provide designers with a collection of preassembled HTML patterns, CSS styles, and JavaScript to add functionality to interactive components like dropdowns and carousels. In essence, these frameworks are handy tool kits for quickly assembling interfaces. If atoms are the basic building blocks of matter, then the atoms of our interfaces serve as the foundational building blocks that comprise all our user interfaces. These atoms include basic HTML elements like form labels, inputs, buttons, and others that can’t be broken down any further without ceasing to be functional.

In all of these examples, the underlying templates are the same, but the user interfaces change to reflect the dynamic nature of the content. These variations directly influence how the underlying molecules, organisms, and templates are constructed. Therefore, creating pages that account for these variations helps us create more resilient design systems. Building up from molecules to more elaborate organisms provides designers and developers with an important sense of context. Organisms demonstrate those smaller, simpler components in action and serve as distinct patterns that can be used again and again. The product grid organism can be employed anywhere a group of products needs to be displayed, from category listings to search results to related products.

By approaching this design exploration in a cross-disciplinary way, teams can find balance between aesthetics, technical feasibility, usability, and functionality. While style tiles are great for exploring design atmosphere, they’re still a bit abstract. To get a sense of how those design ingredients will be applied to an interface, it’s important to quickly move into something a bit more tangible than a style tile. But does that mean visual designers need to jump from style tiles straight into full comps? It’s essential to establish a solid visual direction for the project, so how does a visual designer do that without burning a ton of time on up-front high-fidelity comps? That’s the question that designer Samantha Warren answered when she created style tiles, a deliverable that’s more tangible than a mood board but not as high-fidelity as a fully baked comp.

In this way, the atomic design system is of great value to UI/UX designers, who are almost always working on challenging problems. Learn about this unique approach to UI/UX design and how to create a robust system. Each component or service has its own isolated environment — everything needed to work on its own instance. You can see that each component /Buttons & /Form has its own set of styles, actions, and unit or integration tests that act like an independent piece of feature in your app. (You can also add its own set of images and other local variables.) This makes it much easier, and reduces your efforts, to test your code consistently and effectively.
